PCMS Title I: Parental Involvement Plan

The staff at Pembroke Community Middle School (PCMS) is cognizant of the importance of parental support in the education of our students.  As such, we recognize the need to partner with our parents and actively solicit and encourage parents to be an integral part of the total education process.

 How are parents involved at PCMS?

  • Parent-teacher conferences: Parents and teachers meet at predetermined intervals or impromptu as the need arises.  Student progress is the main focus at these meetings. 
  • School-Parent Compacts: The school, parents, and students develop agreements defining goals, expectations, and shared responsibilities.
  • Title 1/Family Nights: Plans are made annually to hold family nights that support learning and the application of new skills. 
  • Summer reading: Parents and Title 1 teachers work together to combat the summer slump with summer reading programs.
  • School Council: The PCMS School Council has a balance of community members, parents, and educators.  The primary responsibility is to update annually the School Improvement Plan based on student performance and need.  In addition, this body will annually review, and as needed modify, the School-Parent Compact explaining the shared responsibility between the staff and home for the continued academic improvement for all students. In addition, the PCMS School Council acts in an advisory role for the principal on matters of budget.
  • PTO: The school has an active PTO who work directly with the staff at PCMS.  Through their involvement, enrichment activities are scheduled throughout the school year which enhance and support the curriculum.

How do parents communicate at PCMS?

  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • Back-to-School Night (Open House)

  • E-News: Parents have been encouraged to sign up on our website to receive pertinent information regarding PCMS, the district, and community information as well.
  • Email: All staff at PCMS have an email account and parents are encouraged to use this electronic communication to remain connected to their child’s teachers.
  • Phone: We encourage parents to call us when they have a concern or question. 
  • Let’s Talk! is an online communication tool where families can share ideas, concerns or praise with the school.

Title I: School-Parent Compact

The Pembroke Community Middle School and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the state’s high standards.

This school-parent compact is in effect during the 2019-2020 school year.

School Responsibilities:

Pembroke Community Middle School will:

Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

We believe:

  • In creating and maintaining safe and inviting schools;
  • All children can learn and may demonstrate learning in different ways;
  • Every student should contribute to our democratic society and the global community;
  • In making decisions and acting in the best interest of students;

  • In a school community that is ethical, civil and respectful of individual differences;
  • In strong civic, business and community partnerships that support student achievement.

Hold parent-teacher conferences during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.  Specifically, those conferences will be held:

  • November 18th  3:45-7:45 PM
  • December 8th    1:00-6:00 PM
  • March 3rd          3:45-7:45 PM

Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.  Progress report and report cards will be sent home within a week of the grade closing dates:

Provide parents reasonable access to staff.  Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

  • Fall Open House
  • Fall and Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences
  • School Website and Facebook page
  • Teacher websites, Twitter and school email

Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

  • Parents can participate in student led teacher conferences.
  • Parents are welcome to observe classrooms by appointment.

Parent Responsibilities:

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

  • Monitoring attendance.
  • Ensuring that homework is completed.
  • Monitoring amount of television children watch.
  • Monitoring the amount on online screen time (phone or computer).
  • Participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my child’s education.
  • Promoting positive use of my child’s extracurricular time.
  • Staying informed about my child’s education and communicating with the school by promptly reading all notices from the school or the school district either received by my child, by mail, or email and responding, as appropriate.
  • Serving, to the extent possible, on policy advisory groups, such as being the Title I, Part A parent representative on the school’s School Improvement Team, School Council or other district level school advisory or policy groups.

Student Responsibilities:

We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve the state’s high standards.  Specifically, we will:

  • Attend school every day and arrive on time.
  • Complete my homework every day and ask for help when I need it.
  • Read at least 30 minutes every day outside of school time.
  • Check the school’s PowerSchool portal regularly to keep up-to-date with grades and missing assignments.
  • Give my parents or the adult who is responsible for my welfare all notices and information received by me from my school every day.
